An injection molding machine is a technology that gives shape to thermoplastics and certain metals with a low melting point.Die casting has been around for hundreds of years. That’s the process of pouring molten metal into a preformed mold to create an article of a specific shape.

 

Some simple examples that come to mind are the heads of sledge hammers, anvils, and musket balls.  The die casting industry is still alive and well today in many industrial applications.

The primary difference between die casting and using an injection molding machine is the complexity of the plastic mold itself and the fact that an injection molding machine uses higher-pressure injection of the melted material, as opposed to low pressure, or gravity feed.

The complicated shapes desired for an injection molding machine process requires that higher pressure be used in order for the plastic or metal to be dispersed completely and quickly within the mold configuration.

One of the reasons that makes this process so well used is that the speed of production is greatly enhanced because it takes much less time to forcibly inject the material into a plastic mold than to rely on gravity.

Of course, the heavy, non-hollow constructs are still best made with the die cast method.  The plastic injection molding machine is better suited to create finished products with thinner material.  In fact, most metal production applications are limited to a smaller sized article for a number of reasons.

Because of the weight involved castings must be smaller than about 24 inches.  There is a very high initial cost involved which necessitates being able to use the mold over and over again.  The metals used must have a high fluidity.

Plastics injection probably has the largest numbers of application and use today with the unending list of plastic items that are being used and thrown away instead of re-used. Plastic is so much less expensive and adaptable to application that we make everything from toys to automobiles out of it.

The broader range of tooling machines used to produce an ever expanding number of items is growing at a furious rate.  Thermoplastics, (plastics created to melt and form), can be injected, pressed, and carved.

Plastics Injection, leads the way in production technique closely followed by another form of the injection molding machine.  The use of the extrusion machine involves pressing these thermoplastics through ports to shape them into hoses, tubes, and filaments of all dimensions.

Regardless of the material, the injection molding machine has transformed the industrial world and the world we live in.After the initial cost, tooling, and setup is dealt with the advantages make this method, (whether it’s using plastic of viscous metal),  a  highly economical process with a large range of applications.

The metal parts created last longer than those of plastic and have a higher incidence of dimensional consistency.  With both materials there is almost no need for tooling the part further after it is released from the mold. Full automation and repeated use of molds make the injection molding machine the best choice for parts that have to be created in large numbers over a long period of time.
